David Shugg Howe, Sr.

CHATHAM — David Shugg Howe Sr., of North Chatham, passed away May 15, 2011, after a long illness. As a boy, David served as a choir boy at his church and then served as an altar boy and crucifer. He obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. He served five years in the Naval Reserves, with two years of active duty during the Korean War. He worked for J.C. Penney for nine years, and upon moving to Chatham he started with Nickerson Lumber Co. and worked in various capacities for 33 years.

David is perhaps best known for the many parts he played in the community theatre with The Highlanders, and at the Academy Playhouse. His favorite role was Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof” for which he won the Association for Community Theatre Excellence Award for best actor in a musical on Cape Cod.

David leaves his wife of 60 years, Joan Simonson Howe, and their children, Carol Conners of Loleta, Calif., William Howe of Chatham, and David Howe Jr. of Eastham. He also leaves four grandchildren, Andrea Boomer, Melissa Boomer, Kayla Howe and Joshua Howe.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 204 Monument Road, Orleans. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit’s outreach programs for the homeless on Cape Cod, 204 Monument Road, Orleans, MA 02653.
